Paul Yaffe's BMW R18 Transcontinental: A Masterpiece of Custom Craftsmanship

Paul Yaffe's BMW R18 Transcontinental: A Masterpiece of Custom Craftsmanship

When the realms of custom motorcycle design and high-performance engineering intersect, the results are often spectacular. Such is the case with Paul Yaffe’s bespoke creation for BMW: the R18 Transcontinental. Known for his innovative approach to motorcycle design, Yaffe has taken BMW Motorrad’s flagship touring bike and transformed it into a masterpiece that blends luxury with unparalleled custom craftsmanship. This bike has not only captured the attention of motorcycle enthusiasts but has also made significant waves at premier events around the world.

The Genesis of the R18 Transcontinental Build

Paul Yaffe, renowned for his work with custom Harley-Davidsons, took on the challenge of reimagining BMW’s R18 Transcontinental. Paul started by riding the R18 for a few hundred miles.  While the bike had to be broken in, Paul also wanted to get the feel of the bike before he disassembled the bike.  The project spanned approximately 12 months from conceptual design to final assembly, demonstrating Yaffe’s meticulous attention to detail and commitment to perfection. The R18 Transcontinental is a tribute to both BMW's engineering excellence and Yaffe’s flair for personalized aesthetics.

Custom Features that Define the R18 Transcontinental build

  1. Front Wheel:

The R18 Transcontinental's front wheel is a standout feature of Yaffe's design. It boasts a custom 26” x 5.5” forged wheel, which is both visually striking and functionally impressive.  After raking the R18’s neck, special triple trees had to be engineered to correct the trail measurement and optimize handling.  A steel front fender was also hand-made to fit this wheel configuration.  This oversized wheel not only enhances the bike's stance but is also proportionate in comparison to the large Boxer motor, blending style with substance.

  1. Exhaust System:

The exhaust system is another area where Yaffe’s ingenuity shines. The bike features a bespoke, exhaust designed to provide a deep, resonant tone while optimizing engine performance. The custom exhaust not only enhances the R18's sound but also retains the classic Boxer head pipes.  The catalytic converters were removed from the head pipes making way for a bespoke perforated high-flow baffle system.  Lastly a wide-open megaphone exhaust tip was crafted to dump out in front of the saddlebags delivering that quintessential classic hot rod look and sound.

  1. Saddlebags and rear fender:

Yaffe’s custom BMW saddlebags are a marvel of design and practicality. These are not your typical touring saddlebags; they have been reworked to retain the factory saddlebag lids, latches and speakers then a new set of ‘skins’ were created to give the bags a completely new and unique stretched profile while retaining the excellent engineering and functionality that BMW had created.

Next, the team had to extend the rear fender to match the newly stretched bags by crafting a second R 18 rear fender, ensuring it matches the new saddlebags.

  1. Handlebars:

Nothing but the best for this bike so the team recrafted a set of Monkey Bagger Bars to fit on this custom R18 and they are a work of art. They not only provide a perfect ergonomic fit but also add to the bike's overall aesthetic appeal. The Monkey Bars are designed to enhance rider comfort and control, making long-distance rides more enjoyable.
